Overview

Almost every Greek process — residence, company, property, marriage or study — asks for foreign documents that have been authenticated and translated. Greece is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so a document from another member state needs a single apostille from its issuing country rather than consular legalisation, and Greece has issued electronic apostilles through gov.gr since 2023. On the Greek side the document then needs a certified translation, produced by a sworn or otherwise officially recognised translator.

No. Greek authorities accept translations from officially recognised sources — sworn translators, licensed translation offices, authorised lawyers or the foreign ministry — not self-translations, however accurate.

Many Greek processes expect recently issued documents, and criminal-record certificates in particular tend to have a short shelf life. Sequence matters: get them close to when you will file, not months ahead.
